Harz Narrow Gauge Railways

The train that leads up to Mount Brocken was first considered 1884.
First, there was a horse drawn train, and then steam was planned. Finally in 1895 emerged the Nordhausen-Wernigerode Railway Company with the train pulled by steam locomotives with a gauge of 1000 mm. The Cross-Harz railway and Brocken railway from Nordhausen to Wernigerode via Ilfeld with a branch to Mount Brocken at Drei Annen Hohne came into operation in 1899.

After extensive reconstruction of the railway the historic trains are back. The Brocken railway runs just under an hour through the Harz National Park up to 1125 metres above sea level to Mount Brocken station. The 52-kilometre Selketalbahn, the most beautiful of the whole network in the east of the Harz Mountains, leads from Quedlinburg and Hasselfelde and Eisfelder Talmühle. It's a great pleasure to ride in the historical trains through the romantic hills. The train slowly winds its way through many forms and shapes of the mountains, steep slopes passing through rock cuttings and bogs until the summit is reached.
